IT support software upgrades shouldn't be neglected
November 21, 2011Getting the most out of existing IT investments is all well and good, but according to a blog post from Federal Computer Week editor-in-chief John Monroe, departments shouldn't skimp when it comes to necessary upgrades.
It can be tough to justify an upgrade, however, in light of the current budget tightening affecting many IT teams, he said. Older, slower support software and outdated hardware seems like less of a problem if there's no way to pay for something better.
That said, Monroe wrote that waiting too long to update can bring unintended consequences for an organization.
"Unfortunately, it's tough to put a price on productivity, while the price tag on a new laptop is visible for all to see. Putting off the inevitable purchase might only save a nickel here and a dime there, but do that long enough and it all adds up," he wrote.
Luckily, the rapid advance of new technologies should provide improvements in performance for numerous IT support tasks, along with increased competition translating into lower prices.
