IT budgets will likely grow during 2012
February 03, 2012With the economic recovery solidifying and the need for technological innovation weighing heavily on many businesses, a significant number of CIOs and other IT leaders expect their budgets to expand during the coming year. According to a recent survey from TEKsystems, approximately 53 percent of all tech leaders anticipate their budgets will grow during 2012.
Furthermore, the survey found that CIOs are far more optimistic than other IT leaders, as 66 percent of such respondents expect budget growth to hit IT during the year.
Spending increases are expected to focus on both infrastructure and applications. When it comes to spending on infrastructure, 44 percent of respondents said they expect budgets to rise. Another 40 percent said their organizations will likely spend more on applications and services. According to the study, the spending on new IT infrastructure could prove substantial, as 24 percent of those anticipating more spending in the sector expect the amount of funds being made available to purchase new systems to rise by approximately 5 percent.
Investments in mobile device-related projects are expected to headline much of the budget increases coming to IT departments in 2012. Overall, 54 percent of respondents said they were planning implement new mobility solutions during the year. Furthermore, approximately 76 percent of those polled from the healthcare IT sector will be spending on mobility.
Rachel Russell, director at TEKsystems, explained that many of the IT trends that emerged in 2011, but saw minimal spending, will come to greater fruition in 2012.
"During 2011, a number of trends like mobility, cloud computing and business intelligence garnered a lot of hype, but many organizations did not adopt and implement these initiatives right away. In 2012 organizations will be more prepared to take action," said Russell. "It will be critical for businesses to select service providers capable of lending practical insight developed from successful, on the line experiences to help guide and support these initiatives."
As businesses work to initiate new IT projects and shift their configurations to support new technologies, their CMDB infrastructures will likely play a prominent role. Because the CMDB provides key oversight of the IT setup at large, it is instrumental in showing IT workers how any changes will affect operations or availability. Using the CMDB effectively can streamline the introduction of new services and hardware within businesses.
